You might have thought an outdoor ice rink in the midst of a balmy Southern winter might not work so well.

 City Manager John Castile once thought that, and he confessed it openly Monday.

 As it happens, the rink set between City Hall and the Main @ Broad development, which was laden with possible legal concerns and met with unusually warm weather, convinced more than 17,500 people to don ice skates, generating gross ticket sales of more than $158,000 from Black Friday to Martin Luther King Day, city officials say.
